In the U.S. in 2015 there were 35,486 gun related deaths, 22,018 suicides, 12,979 homicides, and 489 accidental deaths. The 489 accidental deaths was down 48% from 1999 when there were 824 accidental gun related deaths. The drop of accidental deaths can be largely attributed to the rise in gun education programs and the safe storage of firearms. While 62% of gun related deaths are do to suicide. In 2015 333 of the gun related deaths occurred during mass shootings only 20 of the deaths came in shooting using an AR-15 styled rifle.
There are approximately 270 million firearms owned in America giving America the highest rate of gun ownership with a rate of 89 gun to every 100 people. In the U.S. 65% of all firearms are owned by 20% of firearm owners. A survey of American gun owner shows that 3 million people carry everyday and 9 million carry at least once a month. |
